After fleeing the scene on foot the suspects, who are all thought to be Afro-Caribbean, are believed to have run back in the direction of Chapeltown Road.

The victim managed to raise the alarm by ringing his friend and was then taken to hospital where he remained for four days. Officers have only now been able to get his account of what happened.

Det Con Clive Newman, who is leading the investigation, said: “It is only by sheer good fortune that we are not undertaking a murder investigation in relation to this incident.

“The victim has been very fortunate to not be more severely injured in what was a frenzied and violent assault.

“I would appeal to anyone who lives or may have been in the area between 9pm and 10pm last Thursday and who may have seen a small group of men acting suspiciously, possibly running away from the scene, to get in touch.

“The type of people that would attack a man with such an apparent disregard for his life need to be arrested.

“Any information received will be treated in confidence.”
