London man charged in connection with murder where the victim stabbed to death in Barnsley

A man from London has been charged in connection with the murder of a 26-year-old who was stabbed to death in Barnsley.

Lazarus Makono, 26, died following an incident on Wednesday February 21.

Officers were called on Wednesday at 1.21am to reports that a 26-year-old man had been stabbed in a house on Cooperative Street.

Despite the best efforts of paramedics, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police launched a murder investigation and a total of five arrests have been made in connection to Lazarus’ death.

On Tuesday (Feb 27), Sipho Pfukani, of Luxembourg Mews, London, has been charged with murder.

He remains in police custody and will appear before Sheffield Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

This follows the arrest, that took place on Saturday (Feb 24), of Terrance Mlotshwa, 27, of Ripley Avenue, Derby, who was charged with murder.

Two women, aged 20 and 25, and a 32-year-old man who were previously arrested for assisting an offender, all remain released on police bail.

Senior Investigating Officer Ben Wood, said: “This is a truly tragic and devastating incident that occurred in the early hours of Wednesday morning, and I want to assure the wider community and the public that we are working around the clock to work out exactly what happened on the day and the circumstances around the incident.

“We are still seeking information from the public that could help officers with this investigation, and we encourage anyone with information to get in touch by calling 101 or using our online portal and quoting incident number 54 of 21 February 2024 when you get in touch.

“Lazarus’ family are heartbroken and grieving during this very difficult time, and my thoughts go out to his family and loved ones.”
