Man killed as Yorkshire village rocked by ‘domestic shooting’

Humberside Police confirmed yesterday that the man shot dead in Melton, near Hull, was found with serious injuries and pronounced dead at the scene.

Meanwhile, a 54-year-old man was found with non-life-threatening injuries and was last night in police custody in connection with the investigation, along with a 34-year-old man and a 15-year-old boy.

The incident sparked an armed siege on Tuesday evening with Humberside Police officers sent to the scene.

Detective Chief Inspector Wendy North, who is leading the investigation, said: “On arrival at the incident we quickly arrested three people in connection with the incident which resulted in the death of a man at the property on Melton Old Road.

“We would like to stress that we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this isolated incident which appears to have resulted from a domestic dispute involving members of an extended family living at or visiting the address.

“Our investigation is very much underway to establish the circumstances and it is important that anyone who may have seen or heard anything in the area at the time contacts us as soon as possible.”

Villagers yesterday claimed that the family involved were members of the travelling community.

Trevor Hulse, who lives a few doors from the bungalow where the incident happened, said: “When I came out of my house my neighbour was standing in her front garden and said that she had seen a man lying on the ground with his stomach hanging out.

“I think they are a traveller family. I don’t know much about them but we would always say hello in passing.

“I heard the gunshots and thought that lorries had crashed into each other on the road behind.”

A neighbour who lives opposite the property added: “They are pleasant people. He keeps his garden immaculate and they have got nice cars.

“I didn’t know what had happened until I saw all of the commotion outside.

“There were a lot of police and people who had come down to see what was happening. I think they are a gypsy family and that the man has a brother but I don’t know any more than that.”

Police officers had yesterday sealed off the house with black tarpaulin, blocking the view to the front of the property.

A van appeared to have crashed into the garage to the side of the house with a second van crashing into the back of that.

Blood-stained rags could also be seen on the ground outside the detached bungalow.

Humberside Police have urged anyone with information about the incident to call the non-emergency number of 101.
