New role ‘an honour’ for top judge

SHEFFIELD’S new top judge spoke of the “huge honour” of being given the role as he started his first day at work.

Judge Julian Goose QC was appointed senior circuit judge, or recorder, of Sheffield earlier this month, replacing Judge Alan Goldsack QC, who retired from the role in May.

The former head of Zenith Chambers in Leeds, is an expert in complex fraud, financial crime, institutional sexual abuse and high value drugs trials, as well as health and safety cases.

His high-profile criminal court cases include prosecuting Karen Matthews and Michael Donovan for the kidnap of Shannon Matthews in Dewsbury in 2009.

Speaking as he started his first day at work yesterday, he said: “It is a huge honour for me to be appointed to this position.”
