Police driver is charged over death of student Jamie Haslett

A SOUTH YORKSHIRE police officer was today charged with causing the death by careless driving of a 19-year-old student who was hit by a patrol car.

University student Jamie Haslett died after he was involved in collision with a South Yorkshire Police car in Sheffield in October, last year.

Today, the Independent Police Complaints Commission said Pc Rodney Craig Mills, 41, who is based at the force’s headquarters, will face a charge of causing death by careless driving when he appears before Bradford Magistrates’ Court on July 15, the IPCC said.

The commission launched an investigation after the death of Mr Haslett, who was originally from the Isle of Man.

He died in an incident at the junction of Broad Lane and Mappin Street on October 27, 2010.

Mr Haslett was in his second year of a BSc (Hons) Sport and Business Management degree at Sheffield Hallam University.
