A police investigation has been launched into a claim that a gun was seen at a South Yorkshire school.

A member of the public reported an overheard conversation suggesting the gun had recently been seen at Kirk Balk Academy in Barnsley.

The conversation was immediately reported to South Yorkshire Police after it was heard last night, but it is not known when the incident actually happened.

No one at Kirk Balk Academy was available to comment this morning.

South Yorkshire Police said: "Officers in Barnsley are currently investigating some information received via a third party that there may have been a recent incident, where a firearm may have been seen, at Kirk Balk Academy.

"While this is not a confirmed sighting of a firearm at this time, South Yorkshire Police takes reports of this nature incredibly seriously and a robust investigation is now underway to ensure that we quickly identify anyone that may have been involved.

"We do not tolerate the possession and/or use of firearms or other weapons and if a crime has been committed, this investigation will deal appropriately with anyone responsible and will take the necessary action to remove any weapons."
