The vehicle’s occupants had fled the scene after overturning a car near Selby, yesterday.

North Yorkshire Police rescued the dog and allowed it to ride shotgun after posting on Twitter that the uninjured animal was now an “honorary” member of the force.

North Yorkshire Police Roads Policing Group tweeted: “Occupants of this vehicle ran away, we found this chap inside so made him an honorary Traffic Cop.”

An hour later, they tweeted: “For all who asked he and the other dog we found are uninjured and being looked after at a safe location.”

Police say enquiries are ongoing to locate the dog’s owners.
