They are appealing for information regarding the whereabouts of 27-year-old Mark Anthony Ainsley and say that residents will have noticed an increased police presence in the Clifton area of York while enquiries to locate the man are taking place.

North Yorkshire Police said that Ainsley, who is considered to be dangerous, was arrested at around 8pm on Wednesday but managed to escape from custody during a visit to York District Hospital at around 3.35am yesterday (Thursday).

A spokesperson said: "The safety of the wider public has been the main priority throughout and the local community should be reassured that any potential risks have been, and continue to be, greatly minimised by the police action."

If anyone has information on his immediate whereabouts call 999, all other information can be provided to North Yorkshire Police on 101, selecting option 1, and speaking to the Force Control Room. Alternativelty, information can be passed to the Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
