Police have criticised several groups of city-dwellers who travelled to the Yorkshire Dales National Park on Sunday.

Residents of Leeds, Bradford and even Oldham in Greater Manchester were all spoken to by officers at popular tourist spot Malham Cove.

PCSO Ruth Pearson from North Yorkshire Police tweeted: "One of my colleagues has just dealt with a number of people visiting Malham...from Leeds, Bradford and Oldham. Seriously not good enough. We are all trying to do our bit, so please take some personal responsibility. People are dying."

The Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority has closed car parks, toilets and visitor centres in a bid to deter tourists from entering the Dales.

Bradford Council has also blocked off access to the car park at Ilkley Moor and several streets nearby after reports the beauty spot had been busy with walkers since the lockdown was imposed.

Other car park closures are in place in Scarborough, Whitby, the North York Moors National Park, and sites managed by the National Trust, Forestry England and Yorkshire Water.

Last week another police officer reported speaking to a couple who had travelled from Liverpool to walk their dog in the Dales.
