Police trying to track down and stop steam traction engine that has caused grass fires to start by the A19 in North Yorkshire

Emergency services are desperately trying to trace a vintage steam or traction engine that has been responsible for several grass fires starting as it travels north through Yorkshire.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said the vehicle has been travelling on the A19 and A168 earlier today and was possibly on the A167 in the Northallerton area.

Fire crews were called to mulitple grass fires beside the A19 believed to have been started by cinders from the engine, which is thought to have been travelling to a rally or steam fair event.

Anyone who sees the engine, whose driver could be unaware of the safety issues posed by it, is asked to call 999 immediately and notify the police of its location.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We're currently attending multiple grass fires which we believe may be caused by a steam/traction engine travelling north on the A19/A168 possibly A167 now Northallerton area. If anybody spots the steam engine, please notify police and fire via 999 of its location."
