‘Relief’ for family of soldier on trial in India

THE mother of a former Army sergeant awaiting trial in India has been told he is being properly cared for and is receiving “appropriate consular support”.

Ray Tindall, a 38-year-old former Hull Trinity House schoolboy, was one of six British ex-soldiers on the crew of the US-owned anti-pirate patrol vessel MV Seamen Guard Ohio who were arrested in October.

Beverley and Holderness MP Graham Stuart contacted the Foreign and Commonwealth Office for help after being approached by Mr Tindall’s family, based in Keyingham in East Yorkshire.

Mr Stuart said: “I have spoken to the Foreign Office about Ray’s detention in India and have received assurances that appropriate consular support is being offered.

“Ray and his colleagues have so far received ten visits from consular staff in prison and the company they were working for is providing legal support.

“Most importantly, I have been able to relay this news to Ray’s mother, Carole, who has naturally been desperately concerned.

“I have asked for steps to be taken to make sure she receives regular updates about Ray’s case.”

Mr Tindall, a former sergeant with The 1st Battalion Yorkshire Regiment, left the Army last April after 17 years of service. His vessel was helping protect commercial shipping when he was arrested and charged with the illegal possession of firearms and illegal procurement of fuel.

His mother, Carole Edmonds, said: “I’m glad to hear the latest about Ray and relieved he’s getting the support he needs.”
