Runaway police car hits telegraph pole and lands on roof in Barnsley street

A RUNAWAY police car crashed and flipped on to its roof in a Barnsley street this morning after reportedly being chased by an officer.

The car came to an abrupt halt on the pavement on on Carlton Road.

Police said no-one was hurt.

A long stretch of the street was closed in both directions as police officers the incident.

Local residents said they saw a police car with no-one inside rolling down the hill, before smashing into a driveway and flipping over.

The car was shortly followed by a male officer running after it, witnesses said.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “At about 11.20am, it is reported that the car travelled a short distance down Carlton Road before colliding with a telegraph pole and overturning.

“No one was in the car, a Vauxhall Astra, and no one was injured as a result of the incident.

“An investigation is now underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.”
