Sheffield factory worker ‘killed colleague over his forgotten wallet’

A SHEFFIELD factory worker killed colleague Simon Holdsworth in ‘revenge’ following an argument about a forgotten wallet, a court has heard.

Mr Moulson told Teesside Crown Court that Wainwright, who denies murder, had wanted to go night-fishing on December 16, 2013 and turned round on his way home from work after realising he did not have his wallet with him.

He said Wainwright saw Mr Holdsworth waiting at his bus stop on Mansfield Road and asked him to reopen the FBS factory on Birley Vale Avenue.

Mr Moulson said Mr Holdsworth had refused as he wanted to go home - resulting in Wainwright driving up to the playing fields where his colleague walked home after getting the bus, lying in wait for him in the dark and then killing him.

He said the attack was ‘some sort of revenge’ for Mr Holdsworth’s refusal and the attack was believed to have been carried out using a metal bar Wainwright had been seen taking from work a few months earlier.

The allegation was made as Wainwright was cross-examined.

Mr Moulson told Wainwright: “You were aggrieved with him for not letting you inside the factory.

“Simon was always talking about his route home and the fact the street lights were out.

“You circled the location just to make sure it was a good place for your attack. It was pitch black.

“You walked into that field with a weapon. You laid in wait in the dark. You attacked him. Knowing he wore a gold chain, you took it from his neck.”

He said the reason DNA from Wainwright had been found on Mr Holdsworth’s trainer was due to the defendant turning Simon over as he took the chain off.

Mr Moulson added: “You didn’t get any blood on you because the attack was so swift.”

Wainwright, 46, of Dagnam Road, Arbourthorne, said the allegation was ‘incorrect’ and he ‘never had a problem with Simon Holdsworth ever’.

He said he had not spoken to Mr Holdsworth after leaving work that night and had not been at the murder scene.

The trial continues.
