South Yorkshire PC William Sampson appears in court accused of attacking boy, 16, after Barnsley football match

A South Yorkshire Police officer has appeared in court today accused of attacking a 16-year-old boy following a derby football match.

PC William Sampson is charged with unlawful and malicious wounding over the incident on Midland Street, in Barnsley town centre, in February, last year.

The incident followed the Barnsley v Sheffield Wednesday match.

PC Sampson, 26, appeared at Leeds Crown Court on Monday and spoke only to confirm his full name and date and birth.

No plea was entered.

A provisional trial date of March 7, 2022, was set.

Addressing PC Sampson, The Recorder of Leeds, Guy Kearl QC said: "We have set the timetable to your trial which, as you know, will take place on March 7, 2022.

"In the meantime, there may be an application to dismiss the case.

"I have set this timetable and you must appear for the hearing.

"Your bail will continue without conditions and on that basis you are now free to leave."

PC Sampson will appear in court again on March 17, where he is expected to enter a plea to the charge.
