Suspected jewellery robber arrested by police after chasing him on bike given to officer by member of the public

A police officer chased down and arrested a suspected robber in a bizarre Yorkshire chase – using a passer-by’s bike to apprehend the suspect.

A member of South Yorkshire Police’s Proactive Roads Policing Team requested a white Range Rover Evoque to stop on Dalton Lane in Rotherham at around 7.15pm on Wednesday (Apr 10).

The car sped off, reversing at 60mph down roads, hitting speeds of more than 80mph in a 30mph zone and going the wrong way around a roundabout. After car crashed, one of the men began to flee on foot, a passer-by gave his bike to the police officer, saying ‘go get em!’.

The officer managed to catch up with the suspect thanks to the bike and the man was eventually arrested when he tried to climb a fence and was found in a garden.

Enquiries led police to believe the car was stolen last week from the Nottinghamshire area, and the man was a suspect in a robbery where £90,000 of jewellery was taken.

The 25-year-old man remains in police custody, while police are still hunting a second suspect who is believed to be the driver of the car.

Roads Policing Inspector Matt Collings said: “This job is a great example of the dedication and commitment of officers to catch those responsible for crimes and how sometimes, a simple routine traffic stop can lead to greater finds.

“Those involved in criminality are more likely to take further risks on our roads and pose a danger to innocent members of the public, our role as roads policing officers is to intercept their criminality and reduce that risk.

“A huge thank you to the member of the public who leant our officer their bike, knowing we have the support of our communities is a great feeling.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting incident number 805 of April 10.
