“As a society, we must get to grips with the issue. We need to address the poverty of hope felt by many children and young people across the country, who see little or no chance of a positive future.

“Many are extremely vulnerable and are caught in a vicious cycle: they carry knives because they don’t feel safe, or because they are being controlled and exploited by criminal gangs.

“The Government must use the opportunity of the Serious Violence Bill to lead a joined up approach to tackling knife crime and other forms of serious violence.

The investigation into what happened remains ongoing and police are keen to hear from anyone who was in the Winn Gardens area around 1.40pm on Friday. Anyone with information should contact South Yorkshire Police.
