Vigil for children injured in Leeds hit and run LATEST

THIS is the 10-year-old girl and her young brother who were fighting for survival last night after being left critically ill by a hit-and-run driver in Leeds as they ran an errand.

Sabah Saleem and her two-year-old brother Rayhan were both struck by a car only yards from their home as they helped their family prepare for the Eid celebrations to mark the end of Ramadan.

The pair, who each suffered serious head injuries, were hit as they crossed Brudenell Road, in Hyde Park, after buying vegetables from a shop with their cousin.

Their devoted parents Tazeem Noor, 32, and father, information technology analyst, Mohamed Saleem, 37, were at their bedsides at Leeds General Infirmary last night.

Surgeons have operated on both children since they were admitted.

The hit and run sparked a police manhunt for the driver who initially slowed down following the impact, then sped off without calling for help for the children.

The incident happened on Saturday at 5.20pm.

West Yorkshire Police are sifting through hours of CCTV footage as part of the investigation to trace the driver involved.

Last night Det Supt Paul Taylor, of the homicide and major inquiry team which is conducting the investigation, said “We are very concerned about their condition.”
