Woman attacked by former partner as she lay in bed at home in Leeds.

A court heard Derryl Hazel left his victim with serious injuries to her hand following the attack.

Leeds Crown Court heard Hazel and the victim had once been in a relationship and have a child together.

Hazel targeted the victim’s home after he transferred £500 into her bank account by mistake in August last year and had been unable to get the money back.

He went into the property as she lay in bed with her new partner and armed himself with a knife from the kitchen.

Hazel then went into the bedroom and dragged her from the bed. He ordered her new partner to “stay asleep” and warned him that he would be stabbed if he tried to intervene.

Hazel pointed the weapon at her groin before assaulting her. The court heard the woman suffered injuries to her hand in the attack and was still unable to flex her fingers properly following the incident.

Hazel, of Mexborough Street, Chapeltown, Leeds, pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding. Anthony Sugare, mitigating, said his client had no previous convictions.

Mr Sugare said Hazel was sorry for the injuries he had caused to the victim.

The lawyer added that Hazel’s intention was to get his money back, not to cause injury to the woman.

Jailing Hazel, judge Tom Bayliss, QC, said: “Those who arm themselves with knives and inflict injury during the course of an assault must expect to go to prison. The victim was particularly vulnerable because of her personal circumstances. She was asleep in bed when you went into her house

Hazel was also made the subject of restraining order banning him from contacting the victim.
