Yobs set boy, 12, on fire as he plays in Scarborough park

A BOY of 12 was set on fire by a group of teenagers as he played with a friend in a Scarborough park.

Police said the victim was with his friend in Manor Road Park on Monday when they were approached by three other boys who engaged them in conversation.

As the victim turned to talk to his friend, one of the teenagers set fire to his clothes, before the three left the park.

The victim, who was not injured, managed to put out the flames which had already burned his trousers and top.

The teenagers were all wearing dark tracksuits and are described as white, aged about 14 or 15 years old, with slim builds. Two of them were about 5ft 6in tall, with brown hair. The other was about 5ft 2in tall with blonde hair.

The two taller suspects were riding bicycles and the other had a scooter.

PC Stewart Curson of Scarborough police, said: “It is fortunate that the victim was uninjured in this incident which could have been far more serious than it was.

“His clothing was burnt and luckily he managed to put the flames out before he sustained any injuries.

“I am appealing for anyone who was in the park at the time of the incident or can help identify the offenders to get in touch with the police or Crimestoppers.”
