Crisis warning on affordable city housing

THE politician responsible for overseeing housing in one of Yorkshire’s property hotspots has warned that demand for affordable homes has never been greater in the city.

A major programme of research is being undertaken in York in a bid to address the critical shortage of affordable properties.

The public are being asked by York Council to express their views in a consultation on how affordable homes in the city should be let in the future.

The council’s cabinet member for housing, Coun Tracey Simpson-Laing, said: “Demand for affordable homes in the city has never been greater. We need to think creatively about how best we use the limited stock we have to meet the wide range of different needs we know exist, whilst retaining the best elements of our current approach.”

Latest figures from the National Housing Federation have shown the average home in York costs £202,800, while the average wage is just £19,800.
