Curtain finally comes down on theatre’s former home

After welcoming countless theatre-goers and hosting thousands of performances, the curtain has finally fallen at the former home of Hull Truck Theatre.

Contractors have started demolition work at the site in Spring Street which was home to Hull Truck for more than 25 years.

The building, a converted Methodist church hall, first opened in 1970 and was initially known as Humberside Theatre. It hosted plays by touring companies and local playwrights such as Alan Plater.

In 1983, the company made Spring Street its home after years of putting on touring productions up and down the country.

Award-winning playwright John Godber helped it gain a national reputation, with many of his plays being premiered the city. The company moved to a new £15m home in Ferensway in 2009.

Theatre chief executive Andrew Smaje said: “Our former home on Spring Street was much-loved and holds many happy memories for our audiences, staff and the people of Hull.

“The building played an important role in the life of the company and it will be sad to see those iconic blue bricks disappear from our landscape. Next year will mark 40 years since the first ever Hull Truck performance, which is an important milestone and a fantastic achievement.”
