Cycle route to extend city’s network

A CIRCULAR cycle route around York has been launched today to allow cyclists to avoid the busy centre and reduce traffic on the notoriously congested roads.

Starting and finishing at the Millennium Bridge, the Orbital Route is designed to allow users to ‘hop on’ and ‘hop off’ destinations around the city which are signposted by 26 numbered ‘way-markers’ that are highlighted on the York Cycle Route Map.

York Council pushed for the new route in response to feedback from residents wanting quiet mainly off-road routes between the inner and outer ring road.

With the previous Cycling City York and current i Travel York programmes, a number of infrastructure improvements have been made to plug gaps in the existing cycle route network. This is aimed at ensuring that those making journeys by bicycle can travel all the way around York quickly, easily and more safely.

Coun Dave Merrett, cabinet member for city strategy said: “The creation of this continuous route means that it’s now much easier to reach the city centre or bypass it altogether, from any direction. York now has one of the most advanced cycle route networks in the UK.”
