Cycle routes launch aimed at bringing in tourists

TOURISM bosses are launching new cycling routes this summer in an attempt to attract more visitors to Yorkshire Wolds.

The Yorkshire Wolds Cycle Route was inspired by the Wolds Way, the national long-distance walking trail that runs from Hessle on the Humber estuary along the Wolds tops and valleys to Filey Brigg.

The new cycling route is circular and longer at 145 miles, and can be approached from Beverley, as well as York, Scarbrough and Bridlington. With less steep slopes than the Dales, it is hoped it will attract families thinking about their first cycling holiday and leisure cyclists.

Visit Hull and East Yorkshire will also be launching eight day cycling routes, from Beverley, Bridlington and Driffield among others, and are keen to get local businesses on board to reap the expected benefit from the passing trade.

Workshops aimed at raising awareness of the new cycle routes start later this month.

Andy Gray, who works for VHEY, said: "We are going to explain to local businesses what we are doing, how we are doing it and how they can become more involved, how they can be more cycle-friendly."

The routes, which are costing the taxpayer 200,000, are part of a three-year development plan, looking to build on the Wolds' natural assets, its gently undulating countryside, villages and churches, food and drink.

Some of the Yorkshire Wolds Cycle Route, which will be marked by blue signs, follows existing routes, with work being done to fill in gaps. Several busy road crossings are being made safer and a 300-yard path is being put in alongside the A166 at Garrowby Street.

Consultant Rupert Douglas said: "People are looking for more active ways of taking holidays, getting closer to the local area and the local people and people will appreciate the fact that the Wolds aren't as visited or as developed as the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District."

One possible route could start at Beverley Minster, spending the first night at Huggate, Thixendale or Leavening, spending a second night in the Bempton/Sewerby area and on the third day heading back to Beverley.

The workshops are being held between 2pm and 4pm at the Methodist Church Rooms, Driffield on February 23; the Minster Parish Rooms, Beverley February 24; Village Hall, Thixendale, February 25; The Spa Harbour Suite, Bridlington, March 2; Old Court House, Pocklington, March 3.
