Cycling ace takes a swing at recruiting golfers for charity

Mountain biker Steve Peat is getting ready to swap the racetrack for the golf course in order to support teenagers who are battling cancer.

The former world champion racer has teamed up with friends to organise a golf day for the teenage cancer unit at Sheffield’s Weston Park Hospital.

Mr Peat, from Chapeltown, Sheffield, and his friends are all long-term supporters of Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, so far raising £44,000 for the cause.

Along with friends Max Feetham, and Robert Copeland, the 37-year-old is organising a golf day at Hillsborough golf course on Friday August 26.

Mr Peat, the men’s downhill mountain bike world champion of 2009, said: “We want to raise as much money as possible and believe we have the right mix of prizes and corporate sponsorship to make it a huge success.

“Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is a fantastic cause and does so much to help people across the region.

“We’ve decided we want our donation to go specifically to the Teenage Cancer Unit, as having visited and met young people there, we’ve seen the difference the charity makes in helping them during such a challenging time,” he added.

Interest in the golf day has been so great that more team slots have been made available for the morning and afternoon sessions.

Although 30 teams have entered so far, there are still places for “quite a few” more. Entry costs £250 per team and all entrants get a personalised polo shirt, balls, a meal provided by the Milestone restaurant and a full evening’s entertainment.

Co-organiser Max Feetham, 35, from Grenoside, said: “We’ve had a lot of interest already it’s such a great cause and it will be a brilliant day So, I’d encourage golfers to get in touch and enter a team and help us raise as much money as possible for this worthy cause.”

Entry information has been posted online at www.steelcitymasters.co.uk.
