Cycling safety slogan added to signs on city approaches

YORK is to raise its profile as a city of pedal power as part of an attempt to keep those in the saddle safe by warning drivers to expect large numbers of cyclists as they come into the area.

The message "Welcome to York – a Cycling City!" will be added to the Welcome to York signs on city approach roads to emphasise that York is one of only few locations nationwide with "cycling city' status.

The signs – visible to drivers as they enter the city from any direction – will also remind them to respect all road users.

Cycling City York and York Council's road safety team joined forces to pay for the change.

Robert Walker, marketing group leader for Cycling City York, said: "We wanted to send out a strong and clear message about the fact that York is nationally recognised as a cycling city, not to mention one of the safest places for cyclists in the UK.

"It's also a great way of reminding motorists of the need to take extra care and respect all road users."

Trish Hirst, road safety officer, said: "We're committed to reducing the number of people injured on York's roads and, by having these Cycling City York badged signs in such prominent locations on approach roads to the city, we're letting motorists know that they will encounter lots of cyclists in York and giving them a timely reminder to drive responsibly."
