Cyclist heading for Paris as tribute to father

A TEENAGER whose father died of motor neurone disease is preparing to cycle to Paris in his memory.

Christian Thélier, 18, from Holmfirth, will set off from London on September 7 and hopes to reach the Eiffel Tower three days later.

Christian, who lost his French-born father Michel to the disease in 2005, has already raised hundreds of pounds for the Motor Neurone Disease Association by completing the Three Peaks of Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon in under 24 hours.

The former student at Greenhead College, Huddersfield is beginning a coaching qualification with the Rugby Football Union at the Shay Stadium, Halifax and will play for Huddersfield RFUC in the coming season.

“I love sport,” he said. “And my father did too. He loved cycling, was a marathon runner and keen squash player, and yet he got Motor Neurone Disease, which just shows that anyone can get it, from the average person to an Olympic athlete.

“It feels very fitting to be doing this challenge in my father’s memory and I know he would be proud of me.
