Cyclist injured in hit-and-run crash set to pursue legal claim against driver

A CYCLIST who suffered a fractured skull in a hit-and-run accident is to pursue a claim for compensation, after receiving a letter from the driver who caused the incident admitting she was at fault.

Peter Vaughan, 63, also suffered multiple fractures to his leg, injuries to his eye and shoulder, and damage to his kidney when he was hit from behind by a car while on holiday in Dublin in October 2010.

Now, nine months later, the classic car lover from Nether Edge in Sheffield is starting to recover, though he is still wearing a metal frame on his leg and is only able to walk using crutches.

Mr Vaughan is now taking legal action to try and gain the compensation money he needs to pay for his rehabilitation.

Jennifer Lund, his solicitor from law firm Irwin Mitchell, said: “Mr Vaughan suffered extremely serious and multiple injuries as a result of this accident and is now going through a long process of rehabilitation.

“His injuries were suffered through no fault of his own and it is essential that he is able to access the highest level of care and rehabilitation available.”

Mr Vaughan was cycling to his son’s house in Clondalkin, Dublin, at the time of the crash. A neighbour found him lying unconscious at the side of the road and called an ambulance, which rushed him to hospital.

Since being back in the UK he has undergone four operations on his right leg at the Northern General Hospital, as well as attending 23 outpatient clinics and physiotherapy classes at the hospital. He also needed treatment at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital on eight occasions.

Mr Vaughan said: “My life has changed completely since the accident and nothing can turn the clock back.

“I used to love fell walking, DIY and travelling, but haven’t been able to do any of these things since my accident.

“My injuries have also had a significant impact on my wife. So far my accident has robbed us of eight months of what was supposed to be most precious time of our lives, and I know my ordeal is far from over.”
