Dad’s Army remake has fans on march to Bridlington

The long-awaited return of Dad’s Army for a blockbuster film remake could give the region’s economy an unexpected boost after a surge in interest in hotels near the seaside set.

Hotel searches in the East Riding town of Bridlington on booking site Hotels.com have increased by 69 per cent in the 24 hours after the first images of the new movie emerged.

A mini city of trailers and lighting units sprung up in the car park at North Landing on nearby Flamborough Head ahead of the first day of shooting last week.

A cast including Catherine Zeta Jones, Sarah Lancashire, Bill Nighy and Michael Gambon, are due to make appearances in the next five weeks, seemingly prompting interest from fans trying to catch a glimpse of their favourite characters.

Lizann Peppard of Hotels.com said: “Many of us have grown up with Dad’s Army on our screens and this new film will entertain a younger generation with top-class British humour.

“A coastal town may not be everyone’s first choice of holiday destination in the colder months, yet the idea of catching a preview of the film has already inspired many of us to pay a visit.”

Catherine Zeta Jones will play a journalist sent to write about the men’s exploits in the film, which is directed by Oliver Parker and sees the hapless volunteers in search of a spy.

The 300ft cliffs at Bempton are set to become the White Cliffs of Dover, while Bridlington’s High Street will stand in as the fictional Walmington-on-Sea.

Last week, a hotelier near the site said crew had been coming in for coffees and meals: “The car park is full of wagons.”
