Motorists in Hawes in Wensleydale were among 10 communities in Scotland and England in line for a potential five pence a litre reduction in duty.

But the scheme faces a delay following complaints from others in the Highlands and Wales that they will miss out.

Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Danny Alexander, said it will now be next year before permission is sought from the European Commission to implement the discount.
