Dales lovers have last chance to join Trailtrekker charity challenge

A FINAL call has been issued for volunteers to take part in Yorkshire's toughest and most picturesque charity challenge this summer before entry closes tonight.

Willing teams of four from across the region have until midnight tonight to register for Oxfam's Trailtrekker event, a 100km sponsored walk through the stunning scenery of the Yorkshire Dales.

Hundreds of people have already signed up for the 100km non-stop trek, which starts and finishes in Skipton and can take teams up to 30 hours to complete.

But the international aid charity is still looking for volunteers to help hit its ambitious 600,000 fundraising target, which takes place over the weekend of June 5 and 6.

James Terry, Oxfam's sponsored events manager, said: "There's only five weeks left until the 100km Trailtrekker kicks off in Skipton.

"Last weekend's London marathon showed people how rewarding a physical challenge can be, bringing together entrants and the countless people watching from the sidelines, while raising huge sums of money for charity. Trailtrekker is the equivalent of two-and-a-half marathons – although we do let entrants walk the route.

"And once you add in the stunning landscapes and the team work it requires, no other charity event can compare.

"With many teams from across the region already registered for the event, we are looking forward to raising thousands for Oxfam's work around the world. However, every team makes a real difference and, with one day left to sign-up, we're still on the look-out for some more brave competitors to complete the ranks.

"We are closing the doors to new entrants at midnight tonight so we can start getting ready for the event, and so all our teams have plenty of time to get themselves fit for the challenge."

The event is renowned for attracting people from all walks of life, and two barristers from Leeds are among the latest to sign up for the 2010 trek.

Nick Worsley and his colleague John Bumphrey at the Zenith Chambers on Park Square will be stepping out for the second consecutive year.

"We took part last year and it was fantastic," said Mr Worsley, 34. "I love this part of the world and particularly the Dales – I'm biased but I think it's the most beautiful part of the country. It's amazing to be up there.

He added: "When we actually did the event it was much the farthest I've ever walked, but after 20 miles or so you really get into your rhythm!"
