Dales rescuers take delivery of replacement ambulance

THE Yorkshire Dales-based Cave Rescue Organisation’s operations have been boosted with the introduction of a new off-road vehicle.

The Land Rover Defender 130, given the title CRO3, will be used as an off-road ambulance and also a personnel carrier to transport team members to incidents in the Dales and further afield.

The interior was converted to improve its stretcher carrying ability and casualty care.

There is an external roll cage to improve passenger safety and the vehicle has been fitted with a special snorkel device which allows it to cross rivers and operate during flooded conditions.

Exterior LED lights will improving working conditions at the scene of incidents.

The old Land Rover will be sold on auction site eBay to offset the cost of the new one.

A spokesman for the CRO, which is based at Clapham in North Yorkshire, said: “CRO are the location mountain and cave rescue team for the Yorkshire Three Peaks region, however it’s important to note that the majority of their rescues occur above ground. The team receives no direct funding from the Government so continual fundraising is essential.”

The organisation wants people to take part in a Three Peaks 24-mile walk on November 12, which is a tricky challenge due to a lack of daylight and possible wintry conditions.

Participants will need map reading and compass skills to navigate round the route themselves.

Last year’s Three Peaks walk took place on a very wet day in August. It raised £3,000 for the team.
