MORE than 100 runners turned out on Saturday to see bride Sarah Martin chased over five miles to the altar.

The 31-year-old former kick boxing champion donned a white frock and matching headdress before being cheered on her way in the inaugural Charlesworth Chase in the Yorkshire Dales. She and her husband-to-be, Nick Charlesworth, from Leeds, are keen runners and decided a bracing run was just the thing prior to making their marriage vows. So at 10.10am she was given a 20 minute start before a further 108 runners – many of them clad in pink and green tutus – attempted to catch up and overtake her.

Her aunt Heather Youngs, from Southsea, Hampshire, said: “I couldn’t believe they were trying to do so much in one day but then she is a project manager so she has used her skills to organise something like this.” Lisa Holmes, 33, from Oxenhope, added: “It’s typical of Sarah and Nick – they are really crazy about fell running. They live, sleep and breathe it so they were always going to do something crazy when it came to their wedding.” Emma Dodd, 22, of Airton, near Malham, said: “I think it is a fantastic idea and a lovely thing to do together. It’s a great bit of fun.”

Tamara Hemsley, 37, added: “I have known Sarah since she joined Hawkesworth Harriers two to three years ago and I thought it was brilliant.”

After completing the race in a respectable time of just over one hour Sarah drank an obligatory half pint of beer outside the Craven Arms in Appletreewick, where the race started and finished. Clad in his dinner jacket and top hat, her husband-to-be, 46, was also one of the early finishers, and teased by onlookers to “drink up, lad” threw most of his pint over his head. The race was won by veteran Ian Holmes, 46 of Bingley Harriers in a time of just over 38 minutes.

After a hot shower and brush-up the couple then headed off to Craigmar in Hebden for their wedding ceremony.
