Death-plunge trio were from same family

Three asylum seekers who plunged to their deaths from a high-rise block of flats are believed to have been a mother, father and son who may have killed themselves rather than face deportation.

The bodies of two men and a woman were found at the bottom of a 31-storey block in Glasgow, on Sunday.

Charity Positive Action in Housing said the three, believed to have originally been from a former Soviet country, had their applications to stay in the UK rejected.

Robina Qureshi, director of the charity, said: "We know that their asylum application had been refused and were facing imminent destitution under the asylum rules. The son was in his 20s and the mother was in her 40s.

She believed a public inquiry into the deaths should also look at the impact the UK Borders Agency had on the lives of asylum seekers living in the fear of removal from the country.

A spokeswoman for the UK Border Agency said it would not comment at the moment.

The three people, who have yet to be named by police, are believed to have fallen from the 15th floor of the flats.
