Demolition crews to move in at blaze site

DEMOLITION work is due to start today to make safe the site of a North Yorkshire waste transfer plant following a devastating blaze.

Yesterday firefighters were still tackling fire hot spots at BCB Environmental Management Limited on Marston Moor Business Park in Tockwith, more than 24 hours after the blaze broke out early on Wednesday.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) also announced yesterday a formal investigation is under way involving itself, the Environment Agency, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and North Yorkshire Police.

An HSE spokesman added: "A formal investigation is under way but our inspector could not get on site this morning because it was very dangerous and a complete mess.

"There was a multi-agency meeting this afternoon. Our officers are aware and investigating but the police are likely to take primacy in the investigation."

There was still no indication yesterday as to what started the fire. At its height, up to 40 firefighters, five appliances and an aerial ladder platform were used to tackle the flames.

The HSE spokesman added: "It will take some times to get all the details. We are looking at months rather than weeks. Then we will decide what action is required."

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said the scene had still been too dangerous yesterday for forensic examination into the cause to begin.

Demolition equipment is due to arrive at lunchtime today with a view to starting work.

At least one fire appliance was due to remain on site overnight.

A police spokesman said: "We are working with the fire service to determine the full circumstances surrounding the fire. There is nothing to suggest at the moment it is suspicious - but those inquires are on going."

No-one from the company was available to comment.
