Department store talk to help in a trip down memory lane

NOSTALGIC Bradfordians can take a walk down memory lane with a talk about a famous department store.

The history of Busbys will be celebrated as part of the Lord Mayor’s Heritage Open Day in Bradford City Hall on Saturday, September 10.

Jean Marshall, who worked in the store’s personnel department from 1946 to 1959, will present a free talk entitled Busbys – a shop full of memories at 11am and 1pm. Seats are limited so people should arrive early to secure a place.

There will also be a display of Busby memorabilia and the chance to buy a book about the store by Colin Neville and Michael Callaghan.

A range of other free activities are also planned for the open day between 10am and 4pm.

These include tours of City Hall’s many rooms, Victorian court re-enactments by local magistrates, a talk by the former Lord Mayor John Stanley King about the Bradford Corporation, and a children’s trail and quiz.

The Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Naveeda Ikram, said: “Busbys is held in great affection by many local people and Mrs Jean Marshall’s fascinating talk will help to evoke memories from when they used to visit the store or, perhaps, when they worked there.”

At its height, Busbys employed 830 people. It closed in 1978.
