Designers on shortlist to create memorial to lost trawlermen

THREE companies have been shortlisted to create Hull’s long-awaited memorial to lost fishermen.

Fishing heritage group Stand said it had narrowed its search down to three candidates – Colour, Dress for the Weather, and Plincke, after a review of five potential designers last week.

These had been drawn from nearly 70 expressions of interest following the launch of the design competition in March.

Stand chairman Charles Pinder said: “We were delighted with the range and quality of the expressions of interest which we received. We have now selected three skilled and experienced teams to develop proposals for the memorial and we look forward to sharing their ideas with the public when their designs are submitted in July.”

The memorial will be installed near the Sailmakers Arms pub on St Andrews Quay and is expected to be in place by April next year.

More than 6,000 trawlermen and boys are thought to have died sailing from Hull since the mid-19th century.
