Detectives in murder probe after man killed at party

A MURDER investigation was under way last night after a man was killed during a New Year’s Eve event which attracted hundreds of people in Sheffield.

Specialist forensic officers spent yesterday at the Stars and Mayfair Function Suites, in Queens Road, on the outskirts of the city centre, where the incident took place in the early hours.

According to police, the victim, who has not been identified, was involved in a “confrontation”, which led to him suffering fatal injuries.

It is thought that another guest at the party called the police at around 2.45am but police last night had not confirmed whether the victim died at the venue.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said a post-mortem examination was expected to take place yesterday and he could not give details about the cause of death.

The spokesman added: “This incident happened at a busy event with more than 400 people in attendance.

“Police are continuing to investigate a number of lines of enquiry to identify the person or people responsible for the man’s death.”

Two teenagers have been arrested in connection with the death of a man who was fatally injured at a New Year’s Eve party in Luton. The 42-year-old man, who has not been identified, was assaulted at a party being held at his partner’s house in Helmsley Close, in Hockwell Ring, in the early hours of yesterday.

Police and an ambulance were called to the property just after 3am but the victim died a short time later.

A teenage girl and boy have been arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the death.
