Disease shock for mother who offered kidney to sick daughter

THE mother of a seriously ill teenager has revealed her heartache after offering one of her own kidneys to her daughter for a transplant – only to find she is suffering from the same condition.

Schoolgirl Lauren Senior, 15, was born with unusually small kidneys and is in desperate need of a transplant to avoid dialysis.

Her mother, Debbie, 42, of Pocklington, near York, stepped forward as a potential donor– but tests revealed she also has the same condition.

Lauren's father, Kevin, has died, and her two older sisters have recently given birth ruling them out as possible donors – meaning the teenager is now dangerously close to requiring dialysis.

"She now only has 16 per cent of her kidneys functioning," her mother said. "If it falls below 15 per cent, it means she will have to start having dialysis.

"It's a race against time to get a transplant. The doctors would like her to have it before her 16th birthday in April."

Mrs Senior claimed that there is a risk her other daughters, Natasha, 23, and Rachel, 21, could also suffer from the same genetic condition.

Lauren's condition means that due to a bladder malfunction, urine flows the wrong way through the kidneys and causes infections.
