'Distraction' thieves rob pensioner, 86

POLICE are hunting thieves who stole medals and other personal items from an 86-year-old man's home in Cleethorpes.

It is believed the incident could be the second case in a month where an elderly person has been targeted in the town by a pair of conmen. The callous crooks claimed to be window fitters and drive around in a silver hatchback, possibly a Ford Mondeo.

The 86-year-old thought he knew the men from a previous double glazing job he had done at his home and he took them to his address in Pendreth Place to look at another job.

Once there they asked for a deposit and he removed money from a safe which he then left on his bed.

When he handed over the cash he was told they wanted more, and when he opened his wallet one of the thieves took his pension money.

He later found that his safe containing his medals, passport, bank books and some photographs had gone.

Police are appealing for anyone who has been approached by the men to get in touch via 0845 60 60 222.
