Diving optometrist makes a splash with glasses rescue

Fisherman Mike Richardson thought his specs were gone for good when they slipped from his nose and disappeared into a murky sea.

But within hours he had them back after an optician with a passion for diving went to exceptional depths for customer service.

Mr Richardson, 69, of Pocketts Warf, Swansea, South Wales, was working on a friend’s boat in the city’s marina when he dropped his £250 prescription glasses into the water.

As they sank into the chocolate-brown depths, he assumed he would never see them again.

Two hours later he was stunned when Specsavers optician Nick King turned up and promptly changed into full diving gear.

Mr King then went overboard in his customer service and stunned curious onlookers by finding the lost glasses.

“When my glasses fell into the water I really didn’t think I’d see them again,” said Mr Richardson.

Mr King spent five years as a commercial diver and instructor before becoming an optometrist.
