DIY call on home flood protection

DIY stores and building merchants should offer advice to home owners on ways to make their property more resilient to flooding, Environment Agency chairman Lord Chris Smith suggested today.

He also urged UK firms to develop more innovative products to help people protect their houses against the effects of floods.

Some flood protection products, such as air brick covers and barriers for doors, are already being used by a number of householders. But Lord Smith said the UK needed more action to help the country's 5.5 million at-risk homes and businesses – and could become a market leader in new technology to deal with flooding.
