Donors given the chance to put their name on a toad

PEOPLE can have their names put on one of the unique toads that will be "released" onto the streets of Hull this summer.

The Hidden Toad, by artist Sasha Heath, is one of dozens of fibreglass sculptures that will adorn the city as part of events marking the 25th anniversary of the death of one of the country's favourite poets Philip Larkin.

The intricate design is intended as a puzzle, with hundreds of toads making up one giant toad and a hidden king toad tucked away wearing a crown.

For a donation of 25 people can support Larkin25 and have their name, or that of someone they nominate, incorporated within the design.

Larkin25 programme director Emily Penn said: "We have been receiving a growing number of enquiries from individual members of the public, so we talked to one of the artists submitting designs for Larkin with Toads and she has agreed to add the names of members of the public supporting the project."

The artist said: "I want to have a sort of puzzle like atmosphere with the sculpture. Where's Wally was one of my favourite children's books, I loved searching through all the detail to find the hidden character, and that is exactly what I plan to do with my toad sculpture.

"The names will add an exciting extra dimension to this concept. I like the irony of hundreds of toads making up one giant toad. It will entice people to interact with the piece. I was originally inspired by Escher's intricate puzzle drawings."

The 10-week event launches on July 17 to coincide with the return of the Clipper yacht fleet. The fleet's departure last year, coupled with a headline-grabbing Freedom Festival, attracted around 150,000 visitors.

Organisers are aiming to have at least 40 toads which will be auctioned for charity at the end of the event.

Larkin's reputation has soared since his death, and he is now considered among the three or four great poets of the 20th century in English, alongside TS Eliot and WB Yeats.
