Don't risk an unlucky dip, bathers told

AS THE weather warms up Wakefield Council is warning people not to be tempted to cool off in ponds, lakes and flooded quarries.

Coun Olivia Rowley, the council's cabinet member for environment and communities, said: "It's easy to be tempted into the water when the weather gets hot. But water that looks inviting on the surface may have hidden dangers underneath, such as rubbish and tangled weeds.

"Swimmers also have no idea of what is under the surface that can ensnare a swimmer and put them in real danger of drowning or severe injury. As well as this, ponds, lakes and flooded quarries which seem pleasantly cool in the shallows can be dangerously cold when they get deeper."

Coun Rowley added: "It is extremely risky to swim in places that are not specifically created for swimming. Please stay out of them."
