Don't travel today, says train firm after a day of chaos

PASSENGERS on the east coast rail line through Yorkshire endured travel misery today as overhead wire problems and a broken-down train led to cancellations and delays of up to two hours.

The problem section was between Huntingdon and Peterborough. It affected services run by the East Coast, First Capital Connect, First Hull Trains and Grand Central train companies.

Delays between Peterborough and King's Cross station in London were expected to last until the close of service tonight.

One departure, the 10.35 from London to Leeds, finally arrived in Yorkshire more than two hours behind schedule. Other trains failed to run at all.

East Coast advised customers not to travel to and from King's Cross today if possible. Passengers who needed to travel were advised to use an alternative route where available.

In a separate incident, a signalling problem caused disruption to National Express East Anglia services between Ipswich and Felixstowe.

Buses had to replace trains between the two Suffolk towns.
