Don't walk out alone, women are warned after York sex attack

DETECTIVES investigating a serious sexual assault on an 18-year-old in York have advised women in the city to avoid walking alone in the evening.

An E-fit has been released of the suspect, who approached his victim from behind and pulled her towards bushes in a field which links Westfield Place and Grange Lane in the Acomb area.

She suffered scratches, cuts and bruises to her face and body in the incident, which occurred at some time between 6.50pm and 8pm last Saturday.

Following treatment, the woman was able to give a detailed description of the suspect to the police which has been incorporated into an E-fit image.

He was described as a white man, aged in his late 20s, about 5ft 5in to 5ft 8in tall, medium build, dark cropped hair and facial features that included thin lips and a rounded chin with stubble. He has a deep voice and a local Yorkshire accent. He was wearing a dark-coloured Puffa-style jacket and light-coloured bottoms.

Det Supt Lewis Raw, leading the inquiry, said: "It is vital that we trace the suspect as a matter of urgency. I urge anyone who recognises the likeness to an individual to contact North Yorkshire Police without delay.

He added: "This was clearly a frightening and traumatic experience for the victim and she has shown real courage to provide a detailed account and description of the suspect to the police.

"She can be assured, along with her family and the wider community, that we are doing everything possible to catch the suspect and bring him to justice."

There has been a heavy police presence in the Acomb area as the investigation continues.

Extra police patrols are also being carried out to reassure local residents.

Det Supt Raw said: "I understand that people living in the area will be feeling uneasy and concerned, which is only natural."

"While I advise people, especially women, to be vigilant and avoid walking alone in the evening, it is important to realise that this type of incident is very rare in a safe place like York."
