Drive to promote Dales with £3m fund

A BID to secure up to £3m in funding to promote the world famous landscapes of the Yorkshire Dales is being prepared in the hope of balancing conservation while bringing in a fresh wave of tourists.

The Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust (YDMT) announced the ambitious proposals yesterday to generate a range of initiatives centred on landscape conservation while also achieving significant benefits for local communities and the economy.

The projects will be focus on the western area of the Dales and will include Ribblesdale, Ribblehead and Chapel-le-Dale as well as Clapdale, Ingleborough and Crummack Dale.

The deputy director at the YDMT, Dave Tayler, said: “The involvement of local organisations, communities and individuals will be essential to the success of this exciting new project.

“We’re looking for people to help us identify the kind of projects that will make a real difference to the area, and support the community’s aspirations for the future of this special place.”

It is hoped that a significant amount of funding can be secured through the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) Landscape Partnership scheme. The YDMT submitted an initial proposal to HLF last year which was well received. The charity intends to work with organisations such as the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority to develop a Stage One bid which will be submitted to the HLF by May.

Two public events will take place to showcase the plans with the first session at the Friends Meeting House in Settle on February 1 between 4pm and 6pm. Another event will be held at Ingleborough Community Centre in Ingleton on February 7 from 4pm to 6pm.
