Driver killed after car smashes into lamppost in Leeds

A driver died in a car smash which brought traffic chaos to one of Leeds’s busiest commuter roads.

The accident happened at 6am yesterday (July 4) on the A65 Leeds Road at Guiseley, outside West Side retail park and near the junction with Nunroyd Avenue.

A blue Peugeot 307 was being driven from the direction of Yeadon into Guiseley when it left the road and hit a lamp-post.

The main impact was taken on the driver’s door. The driver, a 32-year-old man from Bingley, was trapped in the vehicle.

Firefighters from Rawdon fire station fought to release him.

Rawdon watch commander Rob Hart said: “Our crew was the first there. He had left the road and hit a lamppost. The impact was on the driver’s door. We had to extricate him and give him immediate first aid at the scene. We had to get him out pretty quickly.”

Fire and ambulance staff made desperate efforts to resuscitate the young man but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police closed the A65 from its junction with Kirk Lane at Yeadon to Greenbottom at Guiseley. Diversions were put in place but disruption spread to other major routes including Harrogate Road through Rawdon.

The collision happened about 150 yards on the Guiseley side of the town’s boundary with Yeadon.

The stretch of Leeds Road where the crash happened used to be known as Peate’s Mill Corner, after the textile mill which once occupied the site of the West Side Retail Park.

Police seek witnesses, or anyone who saw the vehicle before the crash, on 01924 293047 or via 101.
