Driver runs over stranger at KFC twice because he thought he was unemployed

Craig Robinson, 24, spotted two men rooting through bins outside a branch of the restaurant and bellowed at them to get a job before reversing into his victim with the back of his Ford Transit.

Robinson then took the time to line-up the front of his vehicle with the man before running over him for a second time - inflicting eight broken ribs on him, shattering both of his collar bones and cracking several of the vertebrae in his back.

Hull Crown Court heard that Robinson had jumped out of his vehicle after seeing the two individuals before ordering them to "get a job" and threatening to "run them over", at the KFC on March 19.

His 34-year-old victim was a Polish national who had been in the country for less than a year, while Robinson also got out of his truck to punch the man's 29-year-old friend in the face, knocking him unconscious, as he tried to remonstrate.

Robinson, who has a previous conviction for racially aggravated assault, then "casually" drove off, according to witnesses.

He pleaded guilty to wounding and causing actual bodily harm and was sentenced to five-and-a-half years in prison.

The Honorary Recorder of Hull, Judge Michael Mettyear, warned that if Robinson was ever convicted for violence again, he could be facing life imprisonment.

He said: "Why you behaved so appallingly an in such and extreme manner is beyond me.

"You may have been upset but that is no justification for reacting the way you did. You caused horrendous injuries to your victims.

"If you are in trouble again for violence you'll be serving a life sentence.

"It's likely that for the rest of his life, your victim's injuries may get worse, not better, as times goes by. It was all over nothing."

Reckless Robinson was picked up hours after the vicious assault when CCTV footage captured the truck he was driving.

The man he ran over spent more than three weeks in hospital before being sent to a nursing home to receive 24-hour care, while he recovered.

Det Con Sam Crompton, of Humberside Police, said: "This was an unusual case where Robinson lost his temper and, as a result of his actions, his victims sustained serious injuries.

"I would like to thank the victims for their bravery throughout and also the numerous witnesses who assisted detectives during the investigation."
