Drivers over 50 given safety advice

MORE than 1,400 drivers aged over 50 have been given potentially life-saving tips in a campaign to keep thousands of ageing North Yorkshire motorists on the road.

The county's road safety officials have staged a series of free events for the over-50s to prevent them becoming casualties of failing eyesight and slowing reactions.

There have been 25 roadshows so far in the county, and 347 motorists have taken up the free one-hour refresher drive offered to anyone who attend the events since January.

North Yorkshire County Council's executive member for road safety, Coun John Fort, said: "Older drivers have a wealth of experience but may be a little bit rusty."

A further 19 roadshows are planned for the rest of the year, with the next at the Trinity Methodist Church in Commercial Street in Norton this Saturday.
