Drivers warned over flooding works

Work is to begin this week to repair a stretch of sewer which will stave off flooding in Normanton, near Wakefield.

The £35,000 scheme will involve replacing a section of the sewer which has collapsed, ultimately helping to prevent local homes and the highway from flooding during heavy rain.

Work is to begin on Saturday on Wakefield Road at the junction with Queen Street and is expected to be completed by April 25.

Wakefield Road will be closed at this junction and diversions will be in place while the work is underway.

Den Tansey, of Yorkshire Water’s community engagement team, said: “We thank residents and commuters in advance for bearing with us whilst we work as quickly as possible to get this essential repair completed. Neither ourselves or our contract partners BarhaleWSP will require access to your property during this work.”

Mr Tansey added that all residents are encouraged to ensure that identification is provided before anyone is granted access to a home on any occasion.

The scheme is part of Yorkshire Water’s £120m investment to upgrade its sewer network in the region.
